An orientation to staying in Picton
This page won’t point you to a specific hotel or motel — it’s here to explain the shape of the market instead: what kinds of accommodation exist, and roughly where.
What’s on offer
Destination Marlborough, the region’s official tourism organisation, groups the area’s accommodation into a wide spread of categories: hotels and motels, bed and breakfasts, holiday houses and apartments, backpacker hostels, home stays, holiday parks and campervan/caravan sites, farm stays, and — distinctly — lodges, some of which sit out in the Sounds themselves rather than in town. In short, Picton and the wider region cover the full range from a basic campsite to a boat-access-only lodge, with the usual motel and B&B options in between.
Where accommodation clusters
Most general accommodation — motels, hotels, B&Bs, holiday parks — concentrates in Picton’s town centre and waterfront, walkable from the ferry terminals, alongside further options in Blenheim, Renwick and other Marlborough towns further inland. A distinct second tier sits out in the Marlborough Sounds themselves: a number of lodges and retreats in the outer Sounds are reachable only by water taxi from Picton (or Havelock), with no road access at all. If you’re booking one of these, factor the boat transfer into your arrival and departure plans, not just the stay itself.
Camping near Picton
For campers and campervan travellers, DOC manages a handful of campsites within easy reach of Picton:
Momorangi Bay Campsite
A fully serviced DOC campsite around 13 km from Picton via Queen Charlotte Drive (roughly a 25-minute drive), with both tent and powered sites and two small cabins. It connects to the Link Pathway, and the Queen Charlotte Track is a further 15 minutes’ drive on.
Whatamango Bay Campsite
A basic, conservation-style DOC campsite around 10 km from Picton via Port Underwood Road — about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal — useful for an early departure or late arrival. Facilities are minimal: stream water only, and rubbish must be packed out.
DOC manages further campsites out along the Queen Charlotte Track itself (see Sounds & the Track); all DOC camping needs booking online in advance.
