Every factual claim on this site is checked against a live source, listed here by page section. We’d rather link you to the primary source than restate a number that might go stale — and where sources genuinely disagreed, we say so rather than pick one arbitrarily.

This maps every factual claim on the site to the source(s) it was checked against. Research was gathered via live web search/fetch on 2026-09-05, both independently for this site and via a shared research pass used across the three Picton sites. Where sources disagreed or a fact could not be pinned to an authoritative source, the fact was either omitted, phrased qualitatively, or linked out to the operator's own live page rather than stated as a number — see the "Deliberately omitted / hedged" section at the end.

A fuller internal gap-analysis of what could not be verified is kept alongside this project's working files for anyone maintaining the site; nothing in that analysis contradicts what's stated below, it only records what was left out and why.

  • Ferry terminal proximity to town centre (basis for the walking-distance framing): Interislander and Bluebridge terminal pages, cited under Getting Here above.
  • Cruise season / transient population framing: cited under Home and Things to Do above (cruise season, population figures).
  • Street geography (London Quay/High Street): cited under Home above.
  • Venue category vocabulary (cafe, bakery, takeaway, pub, grocery etc.) follows the shared taxonomy in /var/www/picton-data/SCHEMA.md, used for consistency across the three Picton sites — no specific venue data from venues.json is reproduced on this site.

Deliberately omitted or hedged (do not "fix" these without new sourcing)

  • Ferry fares and timetables — never stated; always linked to the operator's own live page.
  • Coastal Pacific exact 2026 season dates — described as "seasonal," exact resume/end dates not quoted (could not be pinned to a dated primary source).
  • Christchurch–Picton and Nelson–Picton driving distance/time — sources disagreed too widely (Nelson: 108 km vs 134–140 km across different sources; Christchurch: an official-looking NZTA document appears to date from Kaikōura-earthquake-era planning, not current conditions) — omitted in favour of linking to https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/
  • Total area of the Marlborough Sounds — phrased as "something like 4,000 km²" rather than asserted precisely, since sources gave 4,000 km² and 3,700 km² without a clear tie-breaker.
  • Exact renaming year for Picton — early research found both 1850 and 1859; a later, more specific check (New Zealand Gazette record via Wikipedia/Wikidata) supports 1 November 1859, which is what's used, but this rests on a secondary citation of the Gazette rather than a directly fetched primary record.
  • Cruise ship visit counts — explicitly described as a live/seasonal pattern only (October–April), with no fixed number of ships or visits quoted, since any such figure is a dated snapshot.
  • Parking fees, bus fares — no dollar figures quoted anywhere on the site; sourced pages either blocked automated fetching or gave conflicting figures across snippets.
  • Elevation gain and official DOC/MDC "grade" taxonomy for short walks — not available from any source found; only length, time and an informal Easy/Moderate grading (as MDC itself uses) are given.
