About Dolphin watching and swimming

Dolphins are one of the reasons people get on a boat in Queen Charlotte Sound, and E-Ko Tours is the Picton operator that builds trips around them. It runs both a watching trip and a swim tour, leaving from its base on Wellington Street, a short walk from the foreshore and both ferry terminals.

The swim tour runs daily through the winter months (June to October on E-Ko's page) and on a reduced Wednesday-and-Saturday schedule the rest of the year. E-Ko says dusky dolphins are the usual winter visitors and bottlenose dolphins the summer ones; other species turn up less predictably.

DOC sets rules for how boats and swimmers behave around marine mammals, and operators work within them. We have not seen a DOC permit statement on the operator's page, so we do not describe any operator's permit status here.
