The two terminals
Interislander
Foot-passenger terminal on Auckland Street, on the Picton waterfront — the railway station and the InterCity coach stop are beside it. Vehicle check-in is on Lagoon Road. Foot passengers check in at least 60 minutes before departure, and it is about 400 m, with steps, from check-in to the ship. More →
Bluebridge
Terminal at 1 Lagoon Road, under a kilometre from the town centre. A free shuttle runs for walk-on passengers, picking up at the Picton i-SITE on the foreshore. More →
The terminals, the waterfront reserve and the town’s two main streets — London Quay along the water and High Street a block inland — form one contiguous, walkable precinct. No authoritative source gives the distance in metres, so we don’t either; both operators call it a short walk.

Before your ferry
Matched to the gap you have, all on foot from the terminals, with check-in built in:
- 1 hour — the foreshore, the war memorial, and ten minutes over the Coathanger Bridge to Shelly Beach.
- 2 hours — add the Edwin Fox (beside the Interislander terminal) or the Heritage & Whaling Museum on London Quay.
- 3 hours — Shelly Beach and the cliff track to Bob’s Bay and back, about an hour and a half of walking.
- 4 hours or more — the Snout Track to Queen Charlotte View (about two and a half hours return from town) or Tirohanga.

The crossing itself
Two independent companies run vehicle-and-passenger ferries across Cook Strait between Wellington and Picton. Both leave Wellington Harbour, cross the open strait, then thread through Tory Channel and Queen Charlotte Sound to dock at Picton — which is why the final stretch, into the Sounds, tends to be the calmest and most scenic part regardless of operator. Both quote around three and a half hours, longer in rough weather; Cook Strait is a narrows between two seas and has a reputation for being changeable, so build slack into onward connections.
Weather and sailing changes
Crossings are sometimes delayed, altered or cancelled for weather — routine rather than exceptional. Check your sailing status directly with your operator on the day.

Common questions
How far is Picton town centre from the ferry terminal?
Both operators describe it qualitatively — Interislander as "a short walk from town", Bluebridge as "a few minutes from town" — and no authoritative source gives a figure in metres. The Interislander foot-passenger terminal is on Auckland Street on the foreshore; Bluebridge's terminal at 1 Lagoon Road is under a kilometre from the centre and has a free walk-on shuttle to the i-SITE.
What can I do during a three-hour wait?
Allowing for check-in, the walk from the foreshore over the Coathanger Bridge to Shelly Beach and along the cliff track to Bob's Bay and back is about an hour and a half on council figures, and the Edwin Fox museum is beside the Interislander terminal. Is there food near the ferry terminal?
London Quay, the waterfront street, is the closest strip to both terminals; High Street, a block inland, has the everyday cafes and the supermarket. Venues within about a kilometre of the terminal are listed on this page; their hours are on pictonrestaurants.co.nz.
How long does the Cook Strait ferry take?
Both operators state a crossing of around three and a half hours between Wellington and Picton, though it varies with sea conditions.
Can I walk on without a car?
Yes — both ferries carry foot passengers. Bluebridge also runs a free shuttle for walk-on passengers between its Picton terminal and the i-SITE.
