December to February, and the months either side

Picton in summer

What changes in Picton in the warm months: longer museum hours, the Coastal Pacific and the cruise ships in season, busier ferries and track transfers, and the Maritime Festival in January.

New Zealand's summer runs December to February. Marlborough is one of the country's drier, sunnier regions (NIWA), and summer is when the most is running in and around Picton — and when the most people are trying to book it.

What is running

The Edwin Fox museum keeps its longer hours, 9am–5pm, from 1 October to 30 April. The Coastal Pacific train is a seasonal service; the official timetable is the place to confirm the current season. Lochmara Lodge, across the water, says it has reopened for the season.

Cruise ships call from late October to early April: Port Marlborough's 2026–27 schedule has 37 visits between 24 October and 2 April.

What to book ahead

Interislander advises that daytime sailings and peak periods — the summer school holidays, Christmas, Easter and long weekends — fill quickly, and that last-minute vehicle space is often not available. Queen Charlotte Track transfers and DOC campsites also need booking.

Events

The Picton Maritime Festival is on the foreshore on Saturday 23 January 2027, according to its organisers.

Dolphins in summer

E-Ko Tours runs its dolphin swim tour on a reduced Wednesday-and-Saturday schedule from November to May, and says bottlenose dolphins are the usual summer visitors.

Worth knowing

  • DOC warns of wasps on the Queen Charlotte Track in late summer and autumn, and fire restrictions apply year-round.
  • Check a marine forecast before any boat trip, whatever the season.
