June to August, and the shoulder months
Picton in winter
Picton in the cool months: shorter museum hours, no cruise ships, some seasonal businesses closed — and the season when E-Ko's dolphin swims run every day.

Winter in New Zealand runs June to August; in Blenheim's climate data July is the coolest month. Picton is quieter: the cruise season is over, some seasonal businesses close, and the ferries keep running across the strait.
What changes
The Edwin Fox museum is open 9am–3pm from 1 May to 30 September, on its published hours. The Coastal Pacific is a seasonal train, so check the official timetable before planning around it in the cool months. Port Marlborough's cruise season runs late October to early April, so there are no ship days in winter.
Seasonal businesses change too: Lochmara Lodge closed to visitors for the winter in 2026, and Edit Picton says its outdoor pool closes from late April to late September.

Dolphin season
Winter is the main season for E-Ko Tours' dolphin swims: daily departures from 1 June to 31 October on its page, with dusky dolphins the usual winter visitors.
Indoors
Two museums, the library and a wine tour cover a wet day. Our rainy-day plan puts them in order.

Walking
The council tracks around town are not described as seasonal, but clay and bush tracks get muddy after rain, and the Queen Charlotte Track operators warn of soft, muddy sections after this year's repairs.

The Snout Track
The classic Picton walk: along the headland between the two marinas to a lookout, then on to the point.

Worth knowing
- Opening hours contract in the quiet months. For food, check the venue's current hours on pictonrestaurants.co.nz before you walk over.
- Cook Strait sailings are sometimes delayed or changed for weather in any season; check on the day.
