Half a day in Picton

• An afternoon arrival

With half a day you can do one proper thing well. Choose between the headland walk and the water; both start within a short walk of the foreshore.

1. Option A

   The Snout to Queen Charlotte View

   The council measures the first section at 2,581 m and 50 minutes one way from the car park in Victoria Domain, graded Moderate. Starting on foot from the foreshore via Shelly Beach adds time at each end. Allow about two and a half hours out and back from town, or go on to Snout Head (another 40 minutes each way) if you have five.

   The classic Picton walk: along the headland between the two marinas to a lookout, then on to the point.

2. Option B

   A cruise from the foreshore

   Beachcomber's mail-boat run, a Cougar Line or E-Ko cruise to Motuara Island, or the Seafood Odyssea. Departure times and lengths vary by operator and season; book before you count on it.

   Out into Queen Charlotte Sound by boat — the mail run, Motuara Island, dolphins and seals.

3. Option C

   Kaipūpū Sanctuary

   A 10–15 minute water taxi across the bay and a 2.7 km loop track of about 1.5–2 hours in a fenced, predator-controlled reserve. Arrange the return pick-up when you book.
