Before your ferry

Matched to the gap: one hour, two, three, or half a day — and all on foot from the terminals.

Both terminals are on the foreshore, so the question is purely how much time you have. Check-in eats into it: Interislander tells foot passengers to check in an hour before departure (a figure that can change — confirm it on their site), and vehicles earlier still.

  2. 2 hours

    Add a museum

    The Edwin Fox is beside the Interislander terminal; the Heritage & Whaling Museum is on London Quay. Either, plus the foreshore walk, fits.

  3. 3 hours

    Bob's Bay and back

    Foreshore to Shelly Beach (10 min), the cliff track to Bob's Bay (30 min), and the same way back: about an hour and a half of walking, leaving margin for check-in.

    The Snout to Queen Charlotte View

    Two and a half hours out and back from town on the council's figures, plus check-in. Tirohanga (45 min one way from the Garden Terrace end of town) is the alternative view.

    The classic Picton walk: along the headland between the two marinas to a lookout, then on to the point.

Worth knowing

  • Bluebridge's free walk-on shuttle picks up at the i-SITE on the foreshore.
  • Leave the bags: there is no need to carry them on the Shelly Beach walk if you have already checked in — but confirm luggage arrangements with your operator.
