Before a sailing, on foot

A 3-hour ferry wait in Picton

Take off the check-in time and three hours is about two hours free: the foreshore, Shelly Beach and a museum, never more than a few minutes from the terminal.

Start with the check-in time. Interislander asks foot passengers to check in at least 60 minutes before departure; vehicle check-in closes 60 minutes before. Bluebridge publishes its own check-in hours. Take that off first and a three-hour gap is closer to two.

We have not found a public left-luggage service in Picton confirmed by an official source, so plan on walks you can do with what you are carrying, or ask at the i-SITE.

The plan

    The foreshore

The reserve between the town and the water, with the i-SITE and the war memorial archway. If you came off a Bluebridge sailing, its free walk-on shuttle drops at the i-SITE.

The lawn, the palms, the marina and the war memorial — where the town meets the water, and where everything starts.

    Shelly Beach and back

Over the Coathanger Bridge: 422 m and about 10 minutes each way on the council's Easy-graded path.

    The Edwin Fox

Indoors, at Dunbar Wharf at the terminal end of the foreshore. Or the Heritage & Whaling Museum on London Quay, which says it is open most days from 10am to 3pm.

    Food, then check in

London Quay is the closest food to the terminals. See Eat for how to find what is open. Leave yourself the full check-in margin.

Worth knowing

  • With a car and three hours, park once: see Parking for the one-hour free and all-day options.
  • Sailings are sometimes delayed or changed for weather. Check your sailing with your operator on the day.

Track distances and times: Marlborough District Council's Picton by Foot or Bike brochure and track pages; Queen Charlotte Track figures from DOC. Ferry check-in guidance from the operators' own sites; museum hours from the museums' own sites (checked 29 September 2026) — confirm before travelling. Full list on the sources page.
