Time for one proper outing

A 6-hour ferry wait in Picton

About five hours free after check-in: enough for the Snout Track, a boat to Kaipūpū Sanctuary, or a scheduled cruise — pick one, plus lunch.

With six hours you can do one real thing and still be relaxed about check-in (at least 60 minutes before departure for Interislander foot passengers). Choose by the weather and by what you are carrying.

The plan

  1. Option A

Walk: the Snout to Queen Charlotte View

From the foreshore via the Coathanger Bridge and Shelly Beach: about two and a half hours out and back from town on the council's figures. Graded Moderate.

    The Snout Track

The classic Picton walk: along the headland between the two marinas to a lookout, then on to the point.

  2. Option B

    Walk: Tirohanga

The other side of town: 2,021 m and about 45 minutes one way to a lookout, graded Moderate.

View from a hillside lookout over Picton, its marina and Queen Charlotte Sound

    Tirohanga Track

The climb from the edge of town to a hilltop lookout over Picton.

  3. Option C

    Boat: Kaipūpū Sanctuary

About ten minutes by water taxi, then a 2.7 km loop track of 1.5–2 hours. Agree the pick-up time when you book and leave margin for check-in.

    Kaipūpū Sanctuary

A fenced, predator-controlled peninsula ten minutes from the foreshore by water taxi, with a 2.7 km loop track.

    2 hrs – half a dayBy boat
  4. Option D

    Boat: a scheduled cruise

Several operators run cruises from the waterfront; lengths vary. Only book one whose return time leaves your full check-in margin. Dolphin trips leave from Wellington Street.

An Interislander ferry underway in the sheltered water of the sound

    Scenic and wildlife cruises

Out into Queen Charlotte Sound by boat — the mail run, Motuara Island, dolphins and seals.

  5. Wet

    Somewhere dry

The two museums, the cafes, and the library at 2 Dublin Street.

    Picton Library

The town's library and service centre, a block back from the foreshore.

Worth knowing

  • Boats and ferries are both weather-dependent. If the forecast is marginal, choose a walk rather than a boat you cannot get back from.
  • Check the museums' seasonal hours before you rely on one: the Edwin Fox closes at 3pm from May to September.

Track distances and times: Marlborough District Council's Picton by Foot or Bike brochure and track pages; Queen Charlotte Track figures from DOC. Ferry check-in guidance from the operators' own sites; museum hours from the museums' own sites (checked 29 September 2026) — confirm before travelling. Full list on the sources page.
