A weekend in Picton

Town and headland on day one, a section of the Queen Charlotte Track by water taxi on day two, wine or the scenic drive on day three.

  • A proper stay rather than a stopover

A weekend is when Picton stops being a ferry town and starts being the gateway it advertises. The middle day is the one that needs booking.

The plan

  1. Day 1

    Arrive, walk, eat

    Settle in, then the Snout Track from the foreshore (or Tirohanga for the view over town from the other side). The museums if it rains. Dinner on the waterfront.

    The classic Picton walk: along the headland between the two marinas to a lookout, then on to the point.

  2. Day 2

    A day on the Queen Charlotte Track

    Water taxi out in the morning, walk a section, water taxi back. DOC lists Mistletoe Bay to Anakiwa (12.5 km) as a popular day section; the operators run scheduled drops and pick-ups. A QCTLC pass is needed between Kenepuru Saddle and Anakiwa. Or make it a guided kayak day instead.

    73.5 km of ridgeline and bay from Meretoto / Ship Cove to Anakiwa — walked in 3–5 days, ridden in 2–3, or sampled in a day by water taxi.

  3. Day 3

    Wine, or the scenic drive

    A guided wine tour with Picton pick-up (half-day formats exist), or — with a car — Queen Charlotte Drive out to Anakiwa and back, stopping at the lookout over Picton, Ngakuta Bay and Momorangi Bay. Slips closed the Picton end of the Drive in the July 2026 storm, so check NZTA and council road alerts first.

    New Zealand's largest wine region — nearly 31,000 hectares of vines — starts half an hour south of Picton.

Worth knowing

  • Book the day-2 water taxi and, in summer, accommodation ahead.
  • A marine forecast the night before decides whether day 2 is track or wine.
