Most of Picton's walking starts within a few minutes of the ferry terminals. The figures below are Marlborough District Council's (from its Picton by Foot or Bike brochure, re-checked on 29 September 2026) and DOC's, and they are one-way unless we say otherwise. The list is grouped by where you start, not by any view of which is better.
Of the council's tracks around town, two are graded Easy: the foreshore to Shelly Beach, and the Picton–Waikawa track via Endeavour Park. The others below are Moderate.
From the foreshore, on foot
Everything on the Victoria Domain side of the harbour starts over the Coathanger Bridge at the east end of the foreshore. Shelly Beach is the first stop; the cliff track to Bob's Bay and the climb onto the Snout continue from there.

Foreshore to Shelly Beach
Ten minutes from the waterfront, over the Coathanger Bridge, to a small beach.

Lower Bob's Bay Track
Half an hour along the cliffs from Shelly Beach to a bush-fringed bay.

The Snout Track
The classic Picton walk: along the headland between the two marinas to a lookout, then on to the point.

Picton to Waikawa Track
The easy, dog-friendly walk between Picton and the next bay.
From the other side of town
Tirohanga and the two Essons Valley tracks start on the town side, away from the water, and climb into the bush behind Picton.

Tirohanga Track
The climb from the edge of town to a hilltop lookout over Picton.

Essons Valley: Humphries Dam Track
A valley walk from the Garden Terrace car park to the old town water-supply dam.

Essons Valley: Barnes Dam Track
The longer of the two dam walks up the valley behind town.
A short drive out
With a car you can start the Bob's Bay walk from the top, or go on past Waikawa to Karaka Point.

Upper Bob's Bay Track
The high route into Bob's Bay from Victoria Domain Loop Road.

Karaka Point Historic Reserve
A headland lookout beyond the Snout on the road to Whatamango Bay.
By boat
Two of the best-known short walks near Picton need a boat: the loop through Kaipūpū Sanctuary, about ten minutes across the water, and the track to the summit lookout on Motuara Island, which cruises visit.

Kaipūpū Sanctuary
A fenced, predator-controlled peninsula ten minutes from the foreshore by water taxi, with a 2.7 km loop track.

Motuara Island
A predator-free bird sanctuary in the outer sound — saddleback, robin and kākāriki — with a lookout tower on its 128 m summit.
Further afield
On the Havelock end of Queen Charlotte Drive, DOC maintains two short walks at Cullen Point.
Worth knowing
- Dogs: on a lead on formed tracks in Victoria Domain, off-lead only on the Picton–Waikawa track (not in Endeavour Park), and none on the foreshore (council rules).
- The Lower Bob's Bay cliff track has steep bluffs beside it; the council says to supervise children.
- No elevation figures are published for these tracks, so plan by time rather than distance.
